The government has taken initiatives to appoint diploma engineers as teachers of mathematics and science to overcome the secondary level teacher crisis to implement the new curriculum. For that purpose, diploma holders will be given equivalent status to BSc pass if they are working for a minimum of two years.
The Ministry of Education has formed a high-level committee to complete the whole process quickly and transparently. The committee will work to give BSc (pass) equivalent to the diploma holders.
BSC engineers are angry with the government's initiative. Educationists said that if BSc degree is given in this way, weak quality engineers will be created. On the basis of experience, the four-year BSc course can be done for two years without giving a degree.
It was known that in early March this year, the education minister suggested appointing diploma teachers as teachers at the secondary level. In light of this, the Technical and Madrasa Education Department formed a 10-member committee on April 15.
BSC engineers are angry about this. They said that such a decision was taken without any thought. Nowhere else in the world is there a case of certification with experience. This will increase the complexity of the education sector.
Mubashir Alam, an engineer, said, "I do not understand what kind of decision this is. Degree will be given in work experience. So those who work as nurses will be made doctors after a few years?"
An engineer named Jobayer Hossain said on Facebook, the minister made a strange recommendation, BSc equivalent with 2 years of experience. I do not know if there is a system of certification with experience anywhere else in the world. Such a decision will further neglect the diploma engineer. After a few days, the ministers will again say that since the diploma is getting equivalent to BSc with experience, then the students of BUET, CUET, RUET, KUET and science technology will be able to take the exam in the 10th grade job. We diploma engineers do not want this, we want our time in BSc course to be reduced to two years.
Engineer SM Manjurul Islam, general secretary of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, told the media, "This decision is very sad. It is disappointing to make such a sudden decision. The matter needs to be looked into more deeply. Mentioning that there is a huge difference in the curriculum of diploma and BSc, he said diploma engineers study for a total of 14 years, but BSc engineers study for 16 years."
Prof Dr Siddiqur Rahman, former director of Dhaka University's Institute of Education and Research (IER), said the quality of diploma engineering will be weaken. Those who do diplomas are not learning anything extra. Work in the light of what you have learned. Besides, if they work in any organization, they will get a certificate. Did you do the right thing in those organizations? Who will oversee such things? In this way, if the BSc degree is given, weak quality engineers will be created. Without doing this, the BSc course can be made two years instead of four years. That is, those who study two years of BSc after a four-year diploma. Convener of the committee and Additional Secretary (Technical) of Technical and Madrasah Education Department Dr Nazrul Islam told The Daily Post that we have not yet held any meeting in this regard. We'll have a meeting about it soon. Nothing can be said before the meeting. I won't have a single decision here. The matter will be known after the meeting together.
Regarding the opposition of the graduate degree holders, he said that it is clearly written in the notification that BSc pass is equivalent status. That is, they will get the status of degrees. Earlier, if they completed the diploma, they were considered to pass HSC. Now if they have two years of work experience, they will be given degree status.
