The High Court today commuted the death sentence of a man named Abdul Jalil to life imprisonment, in a murder case filed against him for killing his wife Malati Begum in Barguna in 2003.
A High Court bench comprising of Justice Shahidul Karim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman delivered the verdict after holding hearing on the death reference and defendant`s appeal. According to the case, house wife Malati Begum was killed over a family dispute in Bainchotki area at Patharghata upazila in Barguna, on August 28,
2003.
Kakchira Thana Police recovered her decomposed body from an abandoned house nearby a few days later. A murder case was filed on the same day accusing five in-laws of the victim.
On April 8, 2004, the investigating officer of the case pressed charge sheet against seven people in the court.
At the end of the trial, Abdul Jalil was sentenced to death by the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court of Barguna on May 9, 2017. The court also acquitted six people. The death reference was sent to the High Court for approval of death sentence. Besides, the accused filed a jail appeal and a criminal appeal.
