In the first phase, four candidates, including two candidates for the post of chairman, withdrew their nomination papers for the two upazila parishad elections in the district. As a result, nine candidates for the post of chairman, seven candidates for the post of vice chairman, and six candidates for the post of women vice chairman in the two upazilas officially entered the campaign field yesterday afternoon after receiving symbols.
Candidates and their supporters are plowing the election grounds in the scorching heat. Wahidul Islam Munsi, the returning officer and senior election officer of the district said that the candidates for the post of chairman from Bakerganj upazila, Mizanur Rahman and Niwamat Abdullah, withdrew their nomination papers on the last working day of April 22, showing personal reasons.
Besides, Kamrul Islam of the same upazila and Mohammad Faizul Haque Sajeeb from Barisal Sadar upazila have withdrawn their nomination papers for the post of vice chairman. He also informed me that symbols have been officially allocated among the candidates yesterday afternoon. According to the sources, five persons from Barisal Sadar upazila will contest for the post of chairman, four for the post of vice chairman, four for the post of women vice chairman, and from Bakerganj upazila four for the post of chairman, three for the post of vice chairman and two for the post of women vice chairman.
