Combined cycle power plant not turned even in one year

Chandpur's 150 MW combined cycle power plant has been closed for a year due to various complications. It was completely closed on 6 December 2022. After several attempts, the authorities could not start it.

The power plant was scheduled to be commissioned in September 2023. But due to LC complications, it was not possible to launch it even in a year, said Chandpur 150 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant Manager (Engineer) Mohammad Nurul Abshar.

It is known that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of the power plant on April 25, 2010. The power plant was built by China Chengda Engineering Company Limited at a cost of Tk 1,200 crore.

After trial production started in January 2012, it was officially inaugurated by the Prime Minister on November 20, 2013. Initially, the gas-fired power plant was producing 160-180 MW of electricity, although it was supposed to produce 150 MW of electricity. Big types of equipment and machines including gas were becoming useless, so Chandpur 150 MW combined cycle power plant is completely closed.

Power plant manager Mohammad Nurul Abshar said that two units were shut down on December 6, 2022, for maintenance work. One 50 and another 100 MW. The 100 MW unit was slated to be commissioned on February 7, 2023, after renovation and maintenance.

But it could not be restarted as a gas booster failed due to unforeseen reasons. However, he said, LC-related activities have been completed. Hopefully, the equipment and machines will reach the store between 20-21 Decembers. Then the power plant can be commissioned after completing the gas booster work between 10-12 Januarys.
