Golpata plants suffers form leaf disease in Sundarbans

In the Sundarbans, golpata is being destroyed due to leaf disease. Thousands of mango leaves are rotting in different areas including the sanctuary. Forest officials fear that this will affect the new germination of the round trees.

Visiting the Sundarbans, it has been seen that the leaves of gol trees are dying in the places where there are gol leaf wells. This is the condition of the leaves of these trees due to the more dense forest in one place. In some trees, all the leaves have been damaged except the mais leaves (the baby leaves in the middle). The reason for this is that the forest department people and bawalis (fisherman) say that the leaves are being wasted due to not cutting. It is also reducing the amount of fruit of the tree. They also fear that these wells will be destroyed at some point.

East Sundarbans with Chandpai and Sharankhola ranges and West Sundarbans with Khulna Satkhira range. Talking to the forest dwellers of the Western Sundarbans Satkhira range, it is also known that at one time only three wells were extracted from the Khulna range of the Sundarbans West Division. Currently, round leaves are cut from a well. In the rest of the wells, the growth of roundabouts has decreased. The leaves are dying. The amount of fruiting has also decreased due to non-cleaning of trees. As a result, these trees will die. Then the trees will not germinate. Meanwhile, the use of round leaves is decreasing among the people of the coast. People are becoming dependent on tin. Even in this, the round leaf is losing the previous demand.

Sources at the Sundarbans West Divisional Office said that only two wells under this division are now being harvested. Earlier, golpata was extracted from Ar Shibsa, Shibsa and Bhadra from this division and satkhira wells of Satkhira range. Currently, all three sites have been declared sanctuaries. As a result, round leaves are no longer extracted from these wells. Due to which the amount of dead leaves is increasing due to not cleaning the tree.
