Mango pods falling for record heat

Mangoes and litchi pods are falling in Pabna due to extreme heat and drought. Farmers are disorientated by intense heat waves. They are not able to prevent the droppings in any way. There is a fear of crop failure. The farmers also complain that they are not getting support from the field-level officials of the agriculture department.

At present, the temperature of mercury in Pabna fluctuates from forty-one to forty-two degrees. Severe heat waves have adversely affected agriculture. Mangoes and litchi are falling due to extreme heat and drought. Farmers dream of a bumper crop this year after seeing a lot of buds. Currently, litchi pods are peeking through the green leaves. But the farmers' dreams have faded.

Litchi pods are continuously falling due to the heat wave of the last two weeks. Not only litchi, the same is the case with mango. Farmers are not able to prevent mango-litchi pods from falling despite trying in various ways. In such a situation, they are disoriented due to the fear of crop failure. Saiful Islam, a litchi farmer of Nazirpur village, said, "We never imagined that the temperature would rise so suddenly this year." I am trying to prevent the lychee pods from falling in various ways, but nothing is happening. If this continues, losses will have to be counted.

The farmers complain that they are not getting the support of field-level agriculture officials to prevent the fall of mango litchi. Dr. Md. Jamal Uddin, Deputy Director of the Pabna District Agriculture Extension Department, said that it is possible to prevent the fall if there is sufficient irrigation at the base of the tree and spraying of water in the trunk. However, action will be taken if you complain about the non-cooperation of agriculture officials.
