Mulching is an environmentally friendly method of safe vegetable cultivation. At present, farmers are turning to high-value crops in Naogaon with this profitable method. Local development agency Mousumi implementing this approach with funding and technical support from PKSF. If the government comes forward with more cooperation, one-day safe vegetable cultivation will spread throughout the district with this environment-friendly mulching method, the stakeholders hope.
Going to the spot, it was seen that capsicum, tomato, pepper, strawberry, brinjal, bitter gourd are being cultivated in the fields of Jagannathpur, Basantpur, Paharpur, Donoil villages of Badalgachi upazila of Naogaon district on mulching system. Motivated by such eco-friendly methods, other farmers are also preparing land for crop cultivation. Ibne Sabit, another farmer in the same area, said that he has benefited a lot by cultivating cucumbers and bitter gourds using the mulching method. By cultivating vegetables in this way, it is possible to get more yield due to less attack of insects and spiders. Therefore, in the next watermelon season, he said that he would cultivate other crops including watermelon using the mulching method.
Mousumi's Agriculture Officer Mahmudul Hasan (Arif) said that farmers have been encouraging farmers to cultivate vegetables using mulching method as a method of agricultural commercialization using modern agricultural technology. So that the farmers can grow good crops in less time, with less effort, and at less cost, and get more profit by producing twice the amount of safe vegetables. The number of interested farmers is increasing day by day as the results of vegetable cultivation with the mulching method are very good. He expressed hope that vegetable cultivation by mulching method will spread widely in the area soon.
Badalgachi upazila agriculture officer agriculturist Sabab Farhan said that this mulching method has received a great response from the farmers of Badalgachi upazila, which is famous as a vegetable growing upazila. There is no alternative to advanced agricultural technology to modernize the country's agriculture and farmers. Therefore, if the government as well as other development organizations like Mousumi come forward with various programs to modernize the country's agriculture, then it is possible to advance the country's agriculture further in a short period.
