Narsunda River in crisis of existence!

Narsunda River once flowing over the district of Kishoreganj has become a garbage dump. The river is getting smaller and smaller due to land grabs. The then local government minister late Syed Ashraful Islam inaugurated the 'Kishorganj Narsunda river dredging and municipal area development project' at a cost of Tk 110 crore on November 22, 2012.

Although the river was dug and turned into a lake, the situation did not improve. There are many complaints of looting in the Narsunda river project and After digging, the river has turned into a wasteland of dirt and rubbish. In addition, many lands adjacent to the banks of the river have been illegally occupied by the influential.

Due to the lack of flow of water after mining, the river is full of garbage. As a result, the river has lost its navigability and turned into a wasteland of garbage. Due to lack of flow, pathogens are spreading from the rotten smelly water of the river.

On the surface, it was seen that the water of the river had turned black due to the rotting of the kachuripana, and a bad smell was emanating from it. Somewhere it has turned into a garbage dump. The middle of the river is occupied along with the banks. Many people are cultivating crops in small pastures that have woken up. In addition to this, people on the banks of the Narsunda River flowing in Kishoreganj town have occupied the place of the river. According to the information of the district administrator's office, 41 people occupy about 82 percent of the river bank.

However, local environmental activists say that the number of encroachers will be at least 400 people. In this regard, Kishoreganj Water Development Board Executive Engineer Matiur Rahman said that a plan has been taken to restore the water flow of Narsunda River. If implemented, the river will return to its previous form.
