Farmer Taufiq Elahi (63) has become self-reliant by cultivating potal in Bheramara of Kushtia. He was the son of Amjad Hossain of Raita village of Bahadurpur union of the upazila. Even a few years ago, their family used to suffer from scarcity. Turned the wheel of fortune by cultivating potol. He has brought great wealth to the world of scarcity. It can be seen from the soil, he has cultivated Bombay variety of potal in a loft of one bigha (33 cents) of land.
On one side of the potal trees planted in rows, flowers are blooming in bunches, on the other side there are small and big potals. Potal can be harvested from his field for about 2-3 months. According to the information of the Upazila Agriculture Office, potal has been cultivated in 9 hectares of land in the current year. Farmers of this upazila are getting interested in Potal cultivation due to yield and good profit. In this regard, Taufiq Elahi said, once upon a time there was scarcity in his family. Currently, his family has prospered by cultivating potal. This time, he spent about Tk20 thousand by cultivating potal on 33 satak land. So far he has sold Tk70,000 worth excluding expenses. He collected about 15-20 maunds of patol from the field twice a week. He sold the lifted patol at the price of Tk25-30 kg at the college market, the biggest raw material market in the upazila.
Many times the wholesale traders take potal from the field. If the weather is good, he is hopeful that he will be able to sell another Tk1 lakh to 1.5 lakh. He also said that potol will be cultivated on more land in the future as potol is more profitable than other crops. Some potal farmers said that they have been associated with potal cultivation for a long time. They get double profit from potal cultivation. This year they are getting more yield as the weather is good. You can sell it at a good price in the market.
