The embankment on the right bank of the Jamuna river at Bhandarbari union in Dhunat upazila of Bogura breached again. Till Monday noon, about 35 meters of the CC block in front of Bhandarbari village in the project area collapsed and disappeared into the river.
The erosion started on Sunday night. This time the erosion of the Jamuna river has occurred in the dry season. The people of the banks of the Jamuna are worried about what will happen during the rainy season.
According to local sources, the Water Development Board (WDB) financed the project to protect the right bank of the Jamuna River to prevent erosion. Under this project, the work of protecting the 3 kilometer long embankment from Baraitali to Bhutbari village was completed in 2011 at a cost of about Tk 34 crore. As a result, the erosion of the Jamuna river was stopped. Although the water level of the river has decreased, recently a cyclone has been formed due to the strong current of water and Jamna river has started again breaching. Due to this, erosion has started in front of Bhandarbari village. Earlier, on December 12, 2023, about 30 meters of the same area broke and disappeared into the riverbed. At that time, the erosion site was repaired with the funding of the WDB.
WDB Deputy Assistant Engineer Nibaran Chakraborty said they visited the erosion site after receiving the news. The concerned senior officials have been informed about the river erosion. A decision on the renovation of the dam will be taken later.
