Youth demands climate security

A climate strike was held at the Burigoalini area of Shyamnagar, Satkhira as part of the global climate strike program on Friday. Members of the Bangladesh group of Fridays for Future, a school student-led movement founded by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, Pratiki Jubo Sangsad, and Youthnet for Climate Justice organized the climate strike.  Young people participated in the program holding placards with various demands.

Satkhira district coordinator of Youthnet for Climate Justice Imam Hossain spoke on the occasion, Hafizur Rahman, Ecoman project coordinator of Youth Net for Climate Justice, Assistant Project Officer of Islamic Relief Asafur Rahman Asif, Arifurzzaman, Pradeep Chandra Roy, Hisab Rakshan, Officer Redawanur Rahman, Youth Netor Sefa, Shamim Hossain, Abuzar Hossain, Shahin Hossain, Sanjida Khanam etc. The young climate activist demanded justice for climate-vulnerable regions from industrialized countries and stressed the importance of quick strategy implementation by prioritizing sufficient financial funds to compensate them due to climate change.

At the same time, everyone also demands the unconditional cancellation of the financial debt of the countries of the Global South. Young climate activists criticize those involved in Bangladesh's ongoing power crisis and financial burden, citing the impact of importing the harmful and price-unsustainable fossil fuel LNG.  He also highlighted the challenges posed by the rising cost of living of the common man, rising electricity bills and frequent load shedding and inflation.  The youth argued for a significant increase in the proportion of renewable energy in the government's upcoming power master plan to ensure Bangladesh's energy security.
