Woods are being burned instead of coal for fuel in a brick kiln named Harun Bricks in Shalpara Bazar of Panchbibi Upazila of Joypurhat. On the one hand, the plants are destructing.
On the other hand, the environment is under threat. Brick-making and kiln installation laws are not obeyed. Valuable forest and fruit trees are being burnt freely in these brick kilns. The dust, black smoke, and heat of the fire are destroying the green fields, forests, and fruit trees of the nearby areas. Although the local farmers complain about this, the owner of the brick kiln does not care.
It can be seen on the ground that forest and fruit trees are being burnt instead of coal for fuel in the brick kiln. Cultivated land on the west and east sides of the kiln. Farmers currently cultivate maize and potatoes.
Farmers say that brick kilns have been set up along with our three crop fields. I am not able to produce crops as expected. Last year, the administration fined the brick kiln for not following the rules. But this year also again they are burning wood instead of coal.
The workers burning bricks in the brick kiln said that our brick kiln requires an average of 22 to 25 maunds of wood every day. Apart from this, no coal has been used since the beginning of brick burning in kilns.
Harun, the owner of Harun Bricks, spoke on his mobile phone to find out whether they have environmental clearance and whether they are burning wood instead of coal in the brick kiln. He said, not only I, no one in the district has permission from the Department of Environment.
Mohammad Farooq Hossain, assistant director of Joypurhat Environment Department, said there is no permit for the Harun Bricks brick kiln. Legal action will be taken after inspection.
Joypurhat Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdul Al Mamun said I have been informed about this. Legal action will be taken.
