585 killed in 593 road casualties in Jan, 2023

In January 593 road accidents killed 585 people and injured 899 people. At the same time, 46 people were killed in 44 accidents on the railway and 11 people were killed in 13 accidents on the sea route. 642 people were killed and 978 injured in a total of 650 accidents on roads, railways and waterways.

These facts have emerged in the accident monitoring report of the Accident Monitoring Cell of Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association on Saturday (February 4).

Besides, 205 people were killed and 114 injured in 214 motorcycle accidents in January, said the organization working on public transport and passenger rights.

According to the statement signed by Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, Secretary General of the organization , this report has been prepared by monitoring the news of road, rail and waterway accidents published in the national, regional and online newspapers of the country. It has been seen that compared to January 2023, road accidents increased by 5.3 percent and injured by 10 percent in the month of January 2023, but death decreased by 4.6 percent.

According to the report, the analysis of the types of accidents showed that 29.51 percent of the total accidents occurred on national highways, 38.61 percent on regional highways, and 24.45 percent on feeder roads. The most road accidents happened on January 17. 20 people were killed and 31 injured in 35 road accidents that day.

The least number of road accidents occurred on January 2. 10 people were killed and 21 injured in 12 road accidents that day. January 11 was the highest number of people killed in road accidents in a single day. 30 people were killed and 17 injured in 26 road accidents that day.
