On an average, 300 mobile phones are stolen every day in dhaka and its surrounding areas, said Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid, chief of Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch( DMP).

He said this at a press conference after the arrest of 16 members, including two leaders of the hijacker group, from different areas yesterday. The arrested are Md. Mizan, Amirul Islam Babu, Sharif Hossain, Ridoy, Raj, Suman, Sohail Babu, Riday, Moniruzzaman, Nazmul, Monir, Imran, Faruq, Ashraful Islam Sajib, Arif and Hasan.

Mohammad Harun Or Rashid said the arrested told DB that 100 people roamed the streets of the city every day and the mahajan (gang leader) set each of them a target of robbing at least three mobile phones a day. As such, an average of 300 mobile phones are stolen every day in the city. He said that the robbers steal the phones when someone is talking on the phone or browsing the net while sitting next to the window of the bus or car. Later the moneylenders bought the phone from them at a low price.

DB Chief said that cheap phones are sold directly, but expensive phones are opened and sold only for parts. However, in some cases, gang leaders change the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of the phone and sell it. DB officials have requested city dwellers to keep a general diary after such looting incidents so that the law enforcement agencies can at least trace the hotspots. In this regard, a case has been filed at the capital‍‍`s Uttarkhan police station.
