Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun has taken charge as new Inspector General of Police (IGP) on Friday afternoon. Through this he replaced outgoing IGP Dr. Benazir Ahmed. Earlier, Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun was the Director General (DG) of Police`s Elite Force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
When Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun arrived at the police headquarters this afternoon, a well-equipped police team gave him a guard of honor. He was greeted with flowers. Soon after taking charge as the newly appointed IGP, he went to Dhanmondi No. 32.
There, he paid deep respect to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing a wreath on his portrait. Later signed the inspection book there. Senior police officers were present at the time. He then paid tribute to the martyred policemen who laid down their lives in the Great Liberation War by laying wreaths at the police memorial at Rajarbagh. Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun joined the Bangladesh Police as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in the 8th BCS (Police) batch on 20 December 1989. He is hailed as a smart, professional and visionary police officer. During his illustrious career, he served in various units of Bangladesh Police, especially Police Headquarters, CID, Dhaka and Mymensingh Ranges and lastly RAB.
During this time he served as Assistant Commissioner in DMP, Assistant Superintendent of Police in APBN, Circle ASP in Brahmanbaria, Sirajganj and Chandpur districts, Additional Superintendent of Police in Chandpur district and Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police in DMP. He was Superintendent of Police of Nilphamari district. Besides, there were Deputy Police Commissioners at DMP, AIG (Establishment) and AIG (Confidential) at Police Headquarters and Additional DIG of Dhaka Range. Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun also served as DIG (Operations) and DIG (Administration) at Police Headquarters.
He holds the distinction of serving as the first DIG of the newly formed Mymensingh Range. The administrative structure of Mymensingh range was established by his hands. After that he served as DIG of Dhaka range. After being promoted as Additional IGP, he was Additional IGP (HRM) at Police Headquarters.
Chowdhury Abdullah served as the Chief (Additional IGP) CID, the oldest and most specialized unit of the Bangladesh Police. He was last appointed Director General of RAB on April 14, 2020 before taking charge as IGP. He has been awarded the Bangladesh Police Medal (BPM) and the President`s Police Medal (PPM) in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Bangladesh Police.
Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was born on January 12, 1964 in a noble Muslim family in Srihail village of Shalla police station in Sunamganj. He received Honors and Post Graduate Degree in Social Science from Chittagong University. In personal life he is married and his doctor wife is working as Associate Professor at Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College. He is the father of two sons and one daughter. On the same day, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) retired at the end of his career. Benazir Ahmed. After handing over responsibility, he was given a formal farewell at the police headquarters yesterday afternoon. A well-armed police team gave him a guard of honor. At this time he also said goodbye to his colleagues.
Later, the outgoing IGP was gracefully boarded in the IGP`s well-decorated car specially decorated with different types of flowers. As per the police tradition, the IGP was bid farewell by pulling a rope tied to a well-equipped car. Dr. Benazir Ahmed joined the Bangladesh Police in 1988 and served for 34 years and 7 months at various levels. On April 15, 2020, he assumed responsibility as IGP and formulated and implemented various plans.
