This is the first time that Awami League (AL) got highest seats for women reserved in the 12th Jatiya Sangsad. With the support of AL MPs and independent MPs, the party is getting 48 out of 50 seats.

The party has select 48 out of 1,553 candidates for the reserved women seats. But this time the AL has shown quite a surprise in the nomination of the party. During the sale of party nomination forms, the heroines of the movie arena kept the party office crowded. Many people collected AL nomination forms in groups. As a political party activist, the leaders who have been on the streets for a long time openly expressed anger.

In the case of party nomination, there is also a demand to give priority to leaders who have wandered in the political arena and sacrificed in the past. After a long wait, there is disappointing news for the film industry. In nominating the party, the ruling party's nomination board has given more importance to the candidate's position in the party and the candidate's sacrifice for the party than considering the 'star'. Some have also been nominated considering meritorious considerations, party posts and father's contributions. However, such influential AL leaders, who are in the discussion about getting nomination, have also been dropped from the party nomination due to various deeds.

Lucky Inam was likely to be a member of parliament in the reserved women seat. Besides, Shomi Kaiser, Rokeya Prachi, Tarin Halim, Meher Afroz Shaon, Apu Biswas and heroine Nipun were expected to get nominations. But yesterday, the party's nomination board disappointed the fans. Except for Tarana Halim, none of the others got the party nomination. Suborna Mustafa, who was an MP in the last parliament, has also been dropped.

Influential leaders are excluded

Immediately after the formation of the new cabinet, all eyes were on the potential women MP candidates. This time, many influential leaders have also been excluded from women MPs. Artist Momtaz, who was defeated in the election from Manikganj, was in the discussion but she was not nominated. Former lawmaker Sabina Akhter Tuhin, former Jubo Mohila League general secretary Apu Ukil, Jubo Mohila League's current president Aleya Sarwar Daisy, actress Shomi Kaiser, actress Aruna Biswas, former general secretary of Mohila AL Mahmuda and Advocate Tureen Afroz did not consider the party nomination.

But later she had to withdraw her candidacy due to the alliance's seat compromise. On the other hand, AL's international secretary Shammi Ahmed, who was canceled from Barishal, also got the party nomination. Former state minister for labour and employment Begum Monnujan Sufian, former state minister for women and children affairs Meher Afroz Chumki and former MP Sanjida Khanam have also been nominated by the party.

Nomination proof of women's awakening

A meeting of AL nomination aspirants for the reserved seats of the Jatiya Sangsad was held at Ganabhaban in yesterday morning. Sheikh Hasina, also the AL president, said 1,553 aspirants are vying for nomination against the AL's 48 reserved seats in the Jatiya Sangsad. These numbers prove that there has been a women's awakening. The prime minister said the ideology with which the Father of the Nation liberated the country cannot fail, returning to the country to uphold that ideal. Touching the soil of the grave, I swore that I would not allow this freedom to fail, so I did. But the path was not easy. AL leaders and activists have always endured torture. I came to power by enduring jail and oppression. There were repeated threats to life. The goal was to win the war, to take this country to a place of honor. I earned it today. Sheikh Hasina said girls complete any task successfully. Women are ahead in education today.

It is also keeping the signature of success in the workplace. They do well in different professions. Girls are coming to the sports field today after overcoming various obstacles. They've moved on here too. Now the girls are bringing a lot of medals. Girls can't play, don't do business — it doesn't say in Islam. The first person to convert to Islam was a woman, not a man. Bibi Khadija came forward with courage. He was in business. Addressing the nominees, the Prime Minister said, "We will move forward with everyone. The number of 1553 nominees proves that there has been a women's awakening. They also came forward. However, it is difficult to choose 48 candidates out of so many candidates. Can you do it if you have to (choose)? Sheikh Hasina asked.

Earlier on February 6, the Election Commission announced the election schedule for 50 reserved women seats in the Jatiya Sangsad. According to the schedule, the election will be held on March 14. According to the schedule, nomination papers can be submitted from 9 am to 4 pm on February 18 for the reserved women seats. The nomination papers will be scrutinised on February 19 and 20. Nomination papers can be withdrawn till February 25. In the general elections, reserved seats for women are distributed in proportion to the number of seats received by political parties or alliances. This time AL won 223 seats. Independent MPs were elected in 62 seats.

They supported the AL in nominating candidates for reserved women seats. The two parties of the AL-led alliance got two seats. They also formed an alliance with AL. As a result, AL is getting 48 seats. On the other hand, the Jatiya Party won 11 seats. They will get two reserved seats for women. Generally, equal number of candidates are nominated by the party and alliance against the reserved women seats. If this happens, single candidates may be declared elected unopposed at the end of the deadline for withdrawal of nomination papers. If that happens, the members of the reserved women seats will get the opportunity to join the parliament session in the current session of the 12th Parliament.
