New drugs are being found in the country day by day. The officials of Narcotics Control Directorate found various types of drugs including ice, LSD, DOB (an extremely dangerous drug, dimethoxybromoamphetamine, brolamfetamine, bromo-DMA, commonly known as DOB, cocaine. Members of the law and order forces say that a gang is bringing new and dangerous drugs to Bangladesh by sea. Later those drugs are being sent to Europe and Middle East countries. Five members of the gang were arrested after one such gang was discovered. They bring the most valuable and dreaded illegal drug ‍‍`cocaine‍‍` to Bangladesh. The drugs were supposed to be sent to the upcoming football World Cup in Qatar. But on the basis of secret information, Dhaka Metro South Branch of Narcotics Directorate arrested five members of the gang and seized cocaine worth Tk 1 crore before sending them to Qatar. An earlier shipment of cocaine from South America was caught earlier. At that time Jaime Bergley Gomez was from Peru caught in Bangladesh.

Earlier in 2013, another Peruvian national, Zagajita El Barato Juan Pablo Rafael, was arrested by the Narcotics Control Department from an elite hotel in the capital‍‍`s Caravan Bazaar. At that time, three kg of cocaine was recovered from his luggage. Last Monday evening, five members of the drug smuggling gang were arrested in a raid in Khilkhet area of the capital. The arrested are Mintu Officer (34), Ezahar Mia (38), Md. Nazim Uddin alias Munna (40), Md. Nazim Uddin (45) and Mohammad Mamun (27). However, another member of that gang, Mohammad Jahangir Alam (33), is said to be absconding.

Yesterday in a press conference at the office of the Dhaka Metro South Branch of the Narcotics Control Directorate in Gandaria, Additional Director of the Dhaka Division of the Narcotics Control Directorate Md. Zafrullah Kajal said that the news that the accused are bringing crores worth of cocaine to Bangladesh by sea comes to the Directorate of Narcotics Control. Later, work was started to find the cycle through customer service and information technology. At one point, five members of the gang were arrested from Beparipara Road in Khilkhet Bazar of the capital last Monday evening. Later, after the overnight interrogation, 250 grams of cocaine, five mobile phones and a private car were seized from the arrested. The official of Narcotics Control Directorate also said that the price of 250 grams of cocaine is one crore taka.

He also said that during the interrogation, the arrested said that the fugitive accused Jahangir Alam, the driver of the car in Cox‍‍`s Bazar, collected the drugs from a trawler in the deep sea. They were trying to send the dreaded drug cocaine to Qatar in the Middle East. For this purpose they form a circle of friends and acquaintances. The members of that gang were earlier involved in Yaba business. But because of their greed, they are involved in this high-value drug smuggling. However, the additional director Zafrullah Kajal also said that a seven-day remand will be applied to retrieve more information from him.

Narcotics Control Directorate Dhaka Metro (South) Office Assistant Director Subrata Sarkar Shuvo told the daily post, "We were active in investigating the source of various drugs used in the elite areas of the capital. In the past, a large quantity of different drugs including LSD-ice has been seized. A cocaine-trafficking ring was discovered last month as a result. Later the members of the buyer seze circle were contacted. Based on the information given by them and through information technology, the members of the drug trafficking gang were arrested.

Narcotics Control Directorate officials said that there is no market for cocaine in Bangladesh. One kg of pure cocaine can cost up to Tk 35 crore. So it is not used as a drug in Bangladesh. This drug is mainly smuggled through Bangladesh. Some South American countries including Colombia, Bolivia, Peru produce cocaine. But when a person or product from these countries goes to Europe or the United States, the person and the product with him are searched and checked closely at the airport. For this reason, the drug cartels first send the shipment to a country in South Asia or the Middle East like Bangladesh to avoid suspicion. From there it is sent to Europe or the United States.

Chief Chemical Examiner of the Department of Narcotics Control Dr. Dulal Krishna Saha told the daily post that cocaine is the most valuable and dangerous drug in the world. This drug is most commonly used in North American countries; Europe and South America are next. In 1961, international law criminalized cocaine use. He also said that cocaine is usually snorted with the help of a pipe, vaporized by heating in a container or injected into the body. He also said that consumption of cocaine causes diseases like seizures, heart disease, heart attack and stroke, decreased sexual ability, lung damage, HIV, intestinal erosion, nosebleeds.
