Dissolution of Parliament will increase credibility with opposition

-Dr. Shahdeen Malik

The solution to the interim government is on the shoulders of the ruling party. How will the election be held in the future?

The Election Commission (EC) has called for a fair and acceptable political consensus. The country's civil society, including diplomats, has also proposed talks to overcome the electoral crisis.

Amid the unknown panic and heated situation about the 12th election, the ruling Awami League (AL) has proposed that the anti-government, including BNP, will also be taken to the interim government. We need to find a way to satisfy everyone at the political table. Those who are concerned claim that the constitution itself has the answer.

The political party has to find that way. All parties have to make concessions to keep the situation calm in the country. Dissolving parliament will increase acceptance among foreigners, including opposition parties. However, in this case, the ruling AL is not interested in going to the election by removing Sheikh Hasina from power.

On the other hand, the opposition will not go to the polls with Sheikh Hasina in power. After Sheikh Hasina's resignation, they say, there can be a discussion about who can be held in a fair election. AL advisory council member and chief coordinator of the 14-party alliance Amir Hossain Amu said, "Any condition of the opposition will be followed for a fair election. AL is ready for talks to keep the opposition, including BNP, in the interim government. "The AL has also agreed to appoint ministers during the election period on the basis of the number of people from the opposition as technocrat ministers in the cabinet. ’

After the AL's reaction, when asked the opposition political party Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna told the Daily Post "Amir Hossain Amu's call for an interim government with the opposition could be an excuse, not an attempt to resolve the crisis.  We will not go to any interim government by keeping them in parliament. They have to move first. Parliament must be dissolved. Then there can be a discussion on how to form an interim government, including those who can stay. Those who are against the government, including BNP, are doing movement on the streets with the aim of a pure movement. We will force this government to step down and hold elections under an interim government.

BNP standing committee member Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan told the Daily Post that the people of the country no longer believe the AL's words. It is the opposite of what the AL says in its mouth. We have made it clear that we will not go to any election under the present government. I won't even go into any discussion. If this government dissolves parliament and Sheikh Hasina resigns, then there can be a discussion on how to hold a fair and acceptable election. We are doing movement for the liberation of the people of the country. If we go to the interim government on the government's decision, we will not be able to free people. We will not go to any interim government at the behest of the government until parliament is dissolved. You have seen that we were not allowed on the day of our mega rally in Dhaka. When we decided to hold a rally without permission, they were forced to bow down to our movement. The government will also be forced to bow down to the interim government we are doing movement for.

Constitutional expert Dr. Shahdeen Malik told the Daily Post that it is a matter of political consensus to dissolve parliament within the law by upholding the current constitution or to form an interim cabinet and take the opposition as technocrats there. These have been discussed before and solutions have to be found through political discussion. The last elections in 2014 and 2018 were held with parliament. The opposition also went to the polls. I see a different claim coming up this time. Dissolving parliament during elections will increase credibility with the opposition.  Perhaps there will be no question of acceptance internationally either. When parliament is dissolved, there will be no more members until a new election of the current MPs. Then I think the value will increase in transparency and acceptance.
