Due to heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours, some low-lying areas are likely to be inundated, besides the Char areas of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Kurigram. The Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) has expressed such fears in a forecast and warning message yesterday.

Highlighting the current condition of the country's rivers and streams amid the rains, Executive Engineer Sardar Udar Rahman said that due to the low pressure in the Bay of Bengal and the rains across the country, the water of all the major rivers of the country is flowing below the low tide level. As a result, there may be flooding in the next 24 hours. The water levels of Teesta and Dharla rivers in Rangpur division are rising. On the other hand the water level of Dudhkumar river is stable and flowing below the danger level.

According to meteorological agencies, very heavy rainfall (289 mm/24 hours) is expected in Rangpur division and adjacent uplands for the next 24 hours and the rainfall trend may reduce in the next two days. Due to this, the water level of Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers may rise rapidly for the next 24 hours. Stable till next day and may decrease next day. In this situation, the water of Teesta river in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Kurigram districts may flow in plain warning-limits and the respective grazing areas and some low-lying areas of the districts may be flooded.

On the other hand, the water of Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers of Kurigram may flow below the floodplain for the next three days. Other major rivers of Rangpur division are Upper Karatoya, Upper Atrai, Tangon, Punarbhaba, Ichamati-Jamuna and Jamuneshwari rivers which are experiencing water level rise. The water level of these rivers in Rangpur division may increase till the next 24 hours, which may remain stable till the next day.

However, the flow may be below the danger limit. The water level of the rivers may decrease in the next day. Brahmaputra river in Rangpur division and its downstream Jamuna river water level is rising and flowing below the danger level. The water level of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna rivers may remain stable for the next five days.

The level of river Ganga in Rajshahi division is receding and the level of river Padma in its downstream is stable and flowing below the danger level. The water level of the Ganga-Padma rivers may decrease slowly for the next two days, the water level may remain stable for the next day and rise for the next two days. But may flow below the danger line. The waters of the Surma and Kushiara rivers of Sylhet division are rising and flowing below the Bipatsima. In the next three days, the water level of the rivers may decrease.

Other major rivers Manu, Khoai, Dhalai are decreasing in water level, while Someswari, Bhugai are increasing and Sarigoin, Kangs are stable. The water of these rivers is flowing below the Bipatsima. The water level may recede for the next three days. The water level of Muhuri, Feni, Sangu, Matamuhuri, Gomti rivers of Chattogram division is decreasing. On the other hand, the water level of Halda river is stable.

Heavy rainfall (44-88 mm/24 hours) is likely to occur over Chattogram division and adjacent upstream till next three days, due to which water level of rivers in Chattogram division may decrease. According to the information of Bangladesh Meteorological Agency, as there is no low pressure in the concerned Bay of Bengal area, normal tide may be observed in the tributary rivers of Barisal and Khulna divisions for the next three days.
