Feasibility check essential in using tech: Farida

Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhter said, "We often talk about smart climate or eco-friendly technologies, but it is important to deeply consider whether these technologies are actually useful for the country‍‍`s fishermen and coastal communities. That is why a reality check is essential in using technology."

The advisor made this statement in her chief guest speech at a workshop titled "Analysis of the usefulness of Integrated Multi-trophic Aquaculture Technology (IMTA) for Bangladesh, Value Chain Study of IMTA Species, Rapid Situation Analysis of Coastal and Marine Sectors and Environment and Climate Impact Assessment" held at Lakeshore Heights, Gulshan, last afternoon.

The Fisheries and Livestock Advisor said, We need to avoid the misconception that coastal people or fishermen are ignorant about technology. The idea that they do not use science-based technology is not correct. Rather, there is much to be learned from their traditional knowledge.

The advisor further said that various problems are currently prevailing due to climate change and pollution. In this context, it is necessary to ensure the development of the lives and livelihoods of coastal communities, especially for women. World Fish Bangladesh and the UK government‍‍`s Blue Planet Fund can play an important role in implementing this initiative through the Asia-Africa Blue Tech Superhighway project.

She said that Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture Technology (IMTA) is a new topic in Bangladesh. We have to be quite careful in implementing it. Along with World Fish, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, Department of Fisheries, and various universities are involved in this program. It will be possible to take this technology forward more effectively through this coordinated effort.

She further said that government and private initiatives should be taken to market seaweed, green mussels, etc., produced through this technology.

Dr. Anuradha Bhadra, Director General of Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI), and SM Rezaul Karim, Director of the Fisheries Department, were present as special guests at the event. Dr Asaduzzaman and other researchers presented the research results at the workshop.
