Coal extraction has started from Barapukuria coal mine in Parbatipur upazila of Dinajpur after being closed for almost two months. Coal extraction has started since Tuesday morning.

It is known that on February 28 this year, coal mining stopped after 5 lakh 50 thousand tons of coal was extracted from 1306 face of Barapukuria coal mine. At that time, the mining authorities said that the stoppage of mining coal extraction is a normal process, but it will take mid-May of this year to start coal extraction with the development of a new face.

Md. Zafar Sadiq, General Manager (GM-Mine Operations) of Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Limited (BCMCL), said coal mining has started from 1113 face of Barapukuria coal mine. Initially, 1,500 to 2,000 tons of coal will be mined per day on an experimental basis. In the next period, 3,000 to 3,500 tons of coal will be extracted daily. He said, the roadway development work of 1113 face started in July 2022. At that time, BCMCL and Chinese Consortium 1113 faced the overall safety of the mine due to the unexpected occurrence of two large roof falls in the belt gate and open of cut roadway during the development of the underground roadway of the mine. Later, the earlier design was changed and new open-cut construction was started with a length of about 90 meters. Due to the roof fall, the coal mining time has been fixed from the first week of June, delayed from the middle of May this year as per the plan to start the coal mining from the said face for the new open cut construction work.

Managing Director (MD) of Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Limited (BCMCL) Md. Saiful Islam Sarkar said that the extraction of coal from 1113 face of Barapukuria coal mine has started from 6 am shift Tuesday. The coal extraction target of the new 1113 face of the mine is 3 lakh tonnes and it is expected to be possible to extract coal from this face till August this year. The extracted coal will be supplied to Barapukuria Coal Based Thermal Power Plant for uninterrupted power generation. Coal can be mined from this face for approximately four months.
