In the space of a day, the price of green pepper has increased by Tk 30 per kg in the Hili market of Dinajpur due to stoppage of import of green chillies from India and crisis in the local market.

This has started to affect the wholesale and retail market day by day. Buyers are having to face the irony when they come to buy raw chillies due to sudden price increase.

Biplab Hossain, a green pepper trader in Hili Bazar, said that the wholesale price of green pepper per kg in the market yesterday was Tk 104 and the retail price was Tk 110. Today, Friday, that raw chili is being sold at the wholesale price of 124 taka. And the retail sale is 140 Tk. In the wholesale market of Hili Bazar, the price has increased by 20 taka per kg and the price has increased by 30 taka in the retail market. Buyer Farhad Hossain said, yesterday Thursday, raw chilies were sold at Hili Haatday at Tk 110 per kg, but today, on Friday, I bought the raw chilies at the price of Tk 140 per kg.

Mobarak Hossain, a green pepper trader in Hili Bazar, said that the market has been affected due to non-importation of green pepper through the port. Now we have to rely on local green pepper. Prices are rising as the supply is less than the demand for desi pepper.

Harun or Rashid Harun, president of Hili Import-Export Group, said, Bangladesh's IP (import permission) for import of raw chilli has been closed since last 6 months. And because of this, the import of green chillies from India has been stopped for the last 6 months. Also, the price of green chillies is increasing day by day in the local markets due to the increased demand in the area. If the government does not give import permission, the price may increase further.
