Nat’l fisheries week meet held

District Fisheries Department exchanged views with the fishermen in Rangamati.

Member of Rangamati Hill District Council Md Abdur Rahim was present as the chief guest at the view exchange meeting organized by the District Fisheries Department at the office of the District Fisheries Officer at 10:00 am yesterday.

District Fisheries Officer Adhir Chandra Das presided over the meeting while Chittagong Hill Tracts Region Fisheries Resources Development Project Director Md Abdul Al Hasan and Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Sheikh Md Ershad Bin Shahid were present.

District Fisheries Officer Adhir Chandra Das said fish production activities are underway in 2,335 ponds and freak reservoirs with the help of upazila fisheries offices and projects in Rangamati. In addition, cage fish farming efforts have been continued for sustaining, conservation and collection management of fish resources to increase fish production in Kaptai Lake.

Chittagong Hill Tracts Region Fisheries Resources Development Project Director Md Abdul Al Hasan said the aim is to meet the nutritional needs of the people of the CHT region and create employment. The government is implementing project activities with the aim of increasing income and reducing poverty, development of 149 new creeks in the three hill districts. Seventy-three creeks were renovated and 3,980 fishermen were given modern training.

Besides, 78 fish demonstration farms were set up. Not only those, materials were distributed to 775 registered fishermen's families for alternative employment. In addition, digital equipment has been provided to all the upazilas under the project to establish two fish sanctuaries and provide quality services at the field level. Renovation activities have been implemented to increase the capacity of three fish seed production farms to meet the demand of fry fish.

He hoped that a revolutionary change will be brought in fish farming in the hill areas through the implementation of the project activities.
