Two prison guards released for torture

A female prison guard including the head prison guard was transferred after immediate release for allegedly torturing a prisoner at Gaibandha District Jail.

In a letter signed by Touhidul Islam, they issued separate office orders. Later, when the letter reached Gaibandha District Jail, the Gaibandha Jail authorities instructed them to join.

Chief prison guard Md Ashraful Islam and prison guard Sabana Begum have been transferred. Besides, Ashraful Islam has been transferred to Dinajpur District Jail and Sabana Begum to Thakurgaon District Jail.

It was known that Morsheda Khatun Sima is the daughter of Tofazzal Hossain of Choupukuria village in Birganj upazila of Dinajpur. She is an accused in a drug case filed with Gobindaganj Police Station. Sima has been imprisoned in Gaibandha District Jail for nearly five years.

Earlier on April 16, Sima's mother Kariman Nesa submitted a written complaint to the Gaibandha deputy commissioner to take legal action against the torturers. When asked about the allegations, the accused chief prison guard Ashraful Islam said that the complainant of torture Mosheda Khatun Sima is an extremist prisoner. At different times, she continued to influence the prison by torturing the prisoners in various ways.  She has beaten up several inmates and prison guards in the past for protesting. Sima had been transferred to other prisons twice before.

On the day of the incident, Sima got angry and beat up two female prison guards. Later, the two prison guards were rescued with the help of other prisoners. She complained much false information to save herself from the incident of beating the prison guards.

Gaibandha District Jail Superintendent Javed Mehedi confirmed the matter.
