BD is one of the countries suffering from greenhouse gas emissions- Farida

The Advisor of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Farida Akhter said, “Bangladesh is one of the countries suffering from greenhouse gas emissions. Although the rich countries of the world emit a huge amount of carbon, Bangladesh has to bear its terrible impact; yet our contribution to global emissions is only 0.4 percent.”

A verification workshop titled “Dairy and Beef cattle activity data and IPCC Tier-2 based GHG Emission Quantification” was held today at the 3D Hall Room of Krishibid Institution. Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhter was present as the chief guest.

The Fisheries and Livestock Advisor said that although developed countries have promised assistance many times, it has never been implemented. Therefore, we should move forward based on our own capabilities instead of looking at others.

She also said that Bangladesh will represent the livestock sector at the international level in the future on the issue of climate change and carbon emissions. Although the livestock sector has some role in global carbon emissions, its responsibility in Bangladesh is relatively insignificant.

Stressing the importance of investment in the livestock sector, the chief guest said that meat is essential as a source of protein, but we need to make technical and research-based preparations on how to reduce methane gas emissions. Calling on officials to be skilled, she said that the quality of research can be further improved by collecting field-level data in a scientific manner.

The workshop, organized jointly by the Department of Livestock, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Bank, was chaired by Director General of the Department of Livestock Dr. Md. Abu Sufian, Dr. Shakila Faruk, Director General of Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute, Jiaoqun Shi, Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Bangladesh, Amadou Ba, Senior Agricultural Economist and Task Team Leader of the World Bank, teachers from various universities, and senior officials of the Department of Livestock were present at the time.
