Former Education Minister Majid Khan is no more

Former Education Minister Dr. Abdul Majeed Khan passed away. He died in a hospital in Dhaka on Wednesday. He was 94 years old.

He was the founding president of the country's first private university, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). IUB announced his death in a Facebook post.

It has been said that his funeral will be held at IUB campus today at 3 pm on Thursday. He will be buried after the second Janaza at Baridhara Jame Masjid after Friday prayers.

Abdul Majeed Khan served as Education Advisor and Minister of Education in HM Ershad Government. In 1982 he proposed a new education policy. Arabic is compulsory from the first class and English from the second class. The criterion for attaining higher education is merit or ability to bear fifty percent of the expenses.

After the announcement of this policy, the students started the movement. The demand of the students was a non-discriminatory educational policy. But the students complained that the policy announced by Majid Khan had commercialization and religious overtones. So the students started opposing that policy from the beginning.
