Muhuri River embankment collapse

The embankment of Muhuri river has been breached in Feni. Due to heavy rains and landslides, the collapse was seen in the village of Dakshin Shaldhar of Chithlia Union of Parashuram Upazila of the district yesterday morning. Locals said that several areas of the upazila have been flooded due to continuous rains and water breaking through the embankment. If this situation continues for a long time, there is a risk of extensive damage.

Earlier, the local upazila Nirbahi officer Afroza Habib Shapla tsaid that, citing information from the Water Development Board that the water of the Muhuri river in the upazila is flowing 40 centimeters above the danger level due to continuous rain. On the same day at around 10:30 am, Nirbahi officer of Fulgazi upazila of the district Tania Bhuiyan in another short message sent to the media said that the water level of Muhuri river has increased in the local upazila due to continuous rain. According to information received from the Water Development Board, the water is currently flowing 30 cm above the danger level. Preparations have been made as per the instructions of the Deputy Commissioner to deal with the upcoming disaster.

However, the local residents of this upazila claim that several areas are getting flooded due to heavy rains. They fear a major accident anytime if strong measures are not taken to protect the embankment. When asked about this, Feni Deputy Commissioner Most. Shahina Akhtar said that, that the water development board has already started working there and other risky places to protect the embankment under the supervision of the nirbahi officers of the two upazilas with the help of the locals.
