Never-ending agony of teesta residents

Due to the upstream hill slopes and continuous heavy rains for a few days, the water flow of Teesta river has flowed above the boundary line but has come down after last 24 hours. As a result, despite the improvement in the flood situation in five northern districts, the suffering has increased. 51.70 meters water flow was recorded at Dalia Point of Teesta Barrage, the country's largest irrigation project in Doani of Hatibandha Upazila at 9 am yesterday. which flows 45 cm below the danger line (normal 52.15 m). Before this, at 6 am last Sunday, 2 cm above the boundary line flowed.

Although the water is receding, it is receding slowly. Water has receded from most of the houses along the river. The flood situation has improved but the suffering has increased. Various household items were swept away by the flood water. Many of the daily necessities of the world have been spoiled by wet conditions. Panibandi families are busy collecting and repairing these. Meanwhile, Tk56 lakh  and 190 metric tons of GR rice have been allocated in Pachan district by the district administration for the water-logged and flood-affected families. Which the concerned upazila administration and local public representatives have started distributing among the flood victims. Several roads, bridges, culverts in the riverside areas have broken down due to two/three consecutive days of flooding. Growing Aman paddy and various vegetable fields are submerged in flood water.

Farmers fear the loss of these crops due to prolonged immersion. At the same time, several pond fish were washed away by the flood water.Farmer Dolar of Char Ichli village said that the Aman paddy field has been submerged in flood water for three days. The water has started coming down. When the water goes down completely, then the condition of the field can be understood. But there is danger of loss. Riverside life is a life of hardship. Even if the flood comes, it will be difficult if it goes away. Aditmari Upazila Project Implementation Officer Mofizul Islam said that cash has been distributed at the rate of Tk500 per family among the flood-affected and water-logged families. Distribution of GR rice has also started.  

Ahsan Habib, Supervising Engineer of Rangpur Region of Water Development Board, said that Teesta River has reduced its flow at Dalia Point and is flowing below the flood line by 45 cm. As a result, the flood situation has improved in five northern districts. Rangpur Additional Divisional Commissioner Abu Zafar said that Tk56 lakh and 190 metric tons of GR rice have been allocated for the flood victims. Which has already started distribution. The flood situation has also improved considerably.
