Nine detained with illegal fishing nets

 

Nine fishermen were arrested along with 3 lakh fish larvae and a huge amount of illegal nets seized in raids in Hijla and Muladi upazilas of Barishal district. Members of the upazila administration, fisheries department, and naval police conducted the operation. Hijla Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Mohammad Alam confirmed the truth of the information yesterday morning and said that trawlers raided the Meghna River and seized about three lakh fish larvae, 22 illegal nets for catching fish larvae, six kg Pangasher larvae and nine bottles, four drums of fish larvae catching equipment. And one drum of chemical liquid was seized. Four fishermen were also arrested.

Later, Hijla Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Yasin Sadek fined Tk20000  through the mobile court. In addition, the confiscated and illegal nets in the river were burnt and destroyed. On the other hand, 15,000 meters of hilsa current nets were seized and destroyed in raids in Cowria Bazaar, Baherchar, and Lakshipur of the upazila, and four fishermen were arrested and fined Tk 22,000 through the mobile court. Besides, 20,000 meters of current net, one fishing net was seized and destroyed in a raid on Ariyal Khan River in Muladi upazila, and a fisherman was arrested. That fisherman has also been fined Tk four thousand.
