Old MP hostel not yet free from occupation

The MP Hostel, the residence of the MPs, was vacated within a month of the dissolution of the 12th Parliament, but the old MP Hostel at Nakhalpara in the capital is yet to be freed from occupation.

The former Speaker, Chief Whip and VIPs of the 12th Parliament have their own officials and employees (PS, APS, PO and others) occupying the hostel. The government is suffering financially.

According to the sources, the former MPs have been staying in the MP hostel (NAM Bhaban) for more than two years after the dissolution of parliament during the last caretaker government (2006-2008).

After the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, President Md Shahabuddin dissolved the 12th Jatiya Sangsad on August 6 and asked to remove his personal belongings. For this, a letter was sent to the former MPs from the hostel branch of the Parliament Secretariat on August 15. The former MPs then removed their belongings and the hostel branch of the Parliament Secretariat took possession of the houses. But the Parliament Secretariat has not yet got possession of a single building of MP Hostel in Nakhalpara.

Talking to the officials in charge, it was known that the privileged staff of VIPs, including the speaker, deputy speaker, chief whip, took the allotment of houses in the old MP Hostel building in Nakhalpara. As the VIPs do not have these staff, they do not have the opportunity to stay there. After the VIPs left, many of their own officers and employees did not have jobs. They were ordered to leave the house.

Former Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury's personal assistant Md Matiur Rahman occupies rooms 80 and 81 of the old MP Hostel in Nakhalpara. Speaker's Jamadar Md Jamal Hossain occupies room number 85. Room 50 and office assistant Ranjit Halder are in the possession of room number 50 and room number 84 in the possession of her cook Md Tajul Islam.

Deputy Speaker Shamsul Haque Tuku's office assistant Md Rawshan Alam occupied room 16 and jamadar Md Ibrahim Hossain occupied room 42. Room number 51 occupied by Md. Rubel Hossain.

Former opposition leader's office assistant Layes Hossain and former deputy opposition leader's office assistant Md Mahfuzur Rahman occupy room number 73.

It was known that former Chief Whip Nur-E-Alam Chowdhury's Assistant Private Secretary (APS) Md Wadud Mia occupied rooms 52, 53, 54 and 55. Md Anisur Rahman, assistant private secretary to former chief whip ASM Feroz, occupies room number 66. Former whip Mashrafe Bin Mortaza's staff Md Kamal Gazi occupies rooms 76 and 77. Former whip Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan's jamadar Moushumi Begum occupies room number 17. Office assistant ABM Kamrul Hasan occupies room number 47.

Former whip Syamum Sarwar Kamal's personal assistant Mohammad Jamal Uddin occupied room number 82 and 83. Rooms 61 and 62 are occupied by former whip Sanjida Khanam's personal assistant Ahmedur Rahman Mondal. Apart from this, the drivers are living in tin-shed houses without the permission of the authorities.

Meanwhile, the people living in the old MP hostel said that they have not yet received any notice from the Parliament Secretariat about leaving the house.

Farzana Akhter, officer-in-charge of the Parliament Secretariat, said the MP hostel is now empty. Members of Parliament as well as VIPs who used to have their own officials have left their homes. And those who don't have jobs don't have the opportunity to stay there. However, some members of the law enforcement agencies stayed at the Nakhalpara MP Hostel for a long time and are still there.
