The breach of Dharla river at Lalmonirhat has become severe. Every day, new areas are being destroyed. Settlements, crop lands and various structures are being lost due to the destruction. Residents are demanding permanent construction of dams to prevent the destruction.
It can be seen on the surface that the Dharla river has been breached in 5 villages including Bumka, Karnapur, Beparitari, Badaitari in Mughalhat Union of Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila. Since the last 15 days, river erosion has become severe in these villages. Crop land, gardens and residential areas are disappearing in Dharla every day. Thousands of people of Dharlapar are becoming calm in the river. Many have lost their housing and agricultural land and are living on other people's land.
Rabia Khatun, Shafiqul Islam, Bishnu Roy said that due to the destruction of Karnpur village, we have become helpless due to the destruction of the river. Our houses and land have been lost in the river. Now I am living in a house next to the road.
Meanwhile, a 6,500 meter work under the Water Development Board in Karnapur area was started in 2018 but it has not been completed yet. As a result, the sufferings have increased. A new breach has appeared in an area of 700 meters. Aman paddy fields in these areas are moving to the river. Many are cutting paddy trees. Shunil Kumar Roy, executive engineer of Lalmonirhat Water Development Board, said that work is going on to prevent the river from breaking. However, new areas are breaking every day. Efforts are underway to mitigate breakages by dropping geo bags. Allocation for work has been sought on a permanent basis. Work will be done after approval and allocation. The project has been prepared and sent to the concerned department to prevent breakage. The work will be started if the allocation is received.
