Bangladesh Maritime University (BMU) observes World Oceans Day 2025. This year, the theme of the Day is: Sustaining What Sustains Us”.
The university organized a seminar at the Shaheed Moazzem Hall auditorium, Mirpur-14, to celebrate the day.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Rear Admiral Dr. Khandakar Akhter Hossain, NUP, ndc, psc, PhD, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
The Vice Chancellor emphasized producing higher maritime expert graduates in different maritime fields, higher maritime research, quality education, the use of modern technologies, building industry-academia relationships, mutual collaboration, and its application with foreign countries and the overall development of the maritime sector that could contribute to the national economy as well.
Commodore Sheikh Shahid Ahmed, (H1), psc, BN, Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Ocean Sciences of the university, delivered his welcome address.
The keynote speech of the seminar was presented by Commodore Syed Misbah Uddin Ahmad (Retd), Director General of Bangladesh Institute of Maritime Research and Development (BIMRAD).
Professor Dr. Mohammad Nazir Hossain, Head of the Department of Genetic Engineering and Marine Biotechnology of BMU, delivered a valuable speech in the seminar. Ihsanul Haque, Dept. of Marine Fisheries and Aquaculture, was the 1st, and Fazla Ruhan Nuhas, Dept. of Port and Shipping Management from BMU, was the 2nd student presenter, also presenting two scientific papers in the seminar.
There were a lots of findings regarding the oceans, healthy oceans, need of creating technologies to collect different types of Sea fish and deep sea fish, oil, gas natural and mineral resources, inventing electricity, safe shipping transportation, higher maritime education and research, connectivity with stakeholders and foreign maritime organizations, universities and specialist of maritime fields, uses of modern technologies to the oceans, prevent ocean pollution, maritime tourism, formulating master Plan and new business ideas and any other field related to the ocean were taken place in the seminar.
Along with the seminar quiz competition was organized as part of the day`s celebration. Later, the Vice-Chancellor of BMU handed over the prizes among the winners of the competitions and a token of mementos to the speakers of the seminar. The Treasurer, Registrar, Deans, Head of the Departments, Teachers, Officers, and Students of the University actively participated in the seminar.
