Success in life is understood by many to be a 'BCS Cadre'. As a result, the competition to become BCS cadre is increasing in the country. BCS cadre is also in great demand in the job market. Due to these reasons, students start preparing for BCS only after admission in the university. Because of BCS students are giving less importance to subject based studies. Various discussions are currently going on about this issue.
Recently, in a meeting of the University Grants Commission (UGC), university vice-chancellors raised questions about the BCS examination system. They said due to BCS-oriented studies, students study only 6 subjects with more importance. In this they fail to give proper attention to the subject studies. As a result, the desired goal of higher education is not being achieved. For this, they advised the UGC to discuss with the Public Service Commission (PSC) to change the format of the BCS exam.
Those concerned said students are running after BCS for the sake of secure livelihood. The main goal of university students is to become BCS cadre anyway. If not, life is in vain. The status of professionals such as doctors, engineers, and teachers should also be ensured. It is normal for job seekers to pursue BCS if they cannot secure life in other professions.
For the last few years, the educationists have been demanding to change the BCS examination system. Candidates are getting job opportunity in preliminary, written and oral exam based on memorization. Millions of students passing graduation to participate in the BCS exam close their eyes, memorizing the name of the president of America or Honolulu, the capital of an island. As if being a BCS cadre means holding all the success of life in your hands. Not only the salary but also this BCS is one of the ways to match with the power.
Evaluating the results of the last few BCS exams, it is seen that more questions are being asked from science section. Because of this, the job seekers who pass in science are getting more marks in the exam. A review of the 40th BCS results shows that job seekers who have passed from science department have more advantage. Because, there were questions on various subjects of science in the preliminary and written examination. As compared to the job seekers of science department did well in the exam, the candidates of humanities and business education department did not do that well. After 40th BCS it is seen that doctors and engineers are ahead in BCS cadre. 50 people got jobs in administration cadre from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) alone.
3 lakh 38 thousand candidates applied for the last 46th BCS preliminary examination. Total posts in this BCS are 3 thousand 140. Most of these will be taken in the health cadre. 1 thousand 682 in assistant surgeons, 16 in assistant dental surgeons. After that, the highest intake will be in education cadre. 520 people will be recruited from this cadre for BCS education in various subjects. 274 people will be taken in administration, 10 in foreign affairs, 80 in police, 14 in Ansar, 26 in fisheries and 65 in public works.
Prof. Sajjad Hossain, UGC member said in the light of time, as there is a need for teachers, engineers, doctors in the country, BCS cadres are also needed. The state will decide whether the country will run with the administrative cadre. He said education should be given dignity. Respect should also be given to other professionals. Not everyone in the United States is chasing a government job. Earlier, the student who stood first in the first class in the university wanted to become a university teacher. Now want to become BCS cadre. There must be a reason for this. The state should pay attention to these issues.
Professor M Habibur Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET), said in the light of time, there should not be an education system that runs after a specific job. Why should everyone give BCS! Skill based quality education should be ensured.
