Justice revolution in Dhaka CMM court

Bangladesh is now on the path to a new day after passing through the dark era of authoritarian rule. After the fall of the fascist government, a new political chapter was written in the country on August 5.

An important result of that political transformation was the structural change in the judiciary and the attempt to establish independence. In that context, the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court has become a unique example of the courageous step of changing the judiciary and establishing independence. The court, which was once another name for political pressure, influence, and ‍‍`formulaic trial‍‍`, is now breathing the fresh air of justice.

Those concerned say that justice has been shrouded in a political shadow for a long time. Each courtroom was a reflection of a ‍‍`suffocating stalemate‍‍`. However, times have changed since the July uprising, and so has the governance system. And the most visible example of that change has become the CMM Court.

Some of them say that this is a latent revolution in the judiciary. Some say that this is a silent awakening of justice. In a word, it is almost impossible to find a similarity between the old CMM Court and the current one.

Lawyers and litigants say that it is not a court, but now it is a symbol of people‍‍`s trust and justice. Given the unjust reality of the past, lawyers and litigants say that during the fascist Hasina government, the Dhaka CMM Court was practically under political control. Incidents like lengthy cases, purposeful charge sheets, and denial of bail were everyday stories.

Senior lawyers say that then, not the court, but the verdict came from the administrative ‍‍`table‍‍` influenced by the Ministry of Law. They also say that independence and transparency have emerged in the current reality. Currently, the learned judges are making independent and impartial decisions. Political interference is almost extinct today. Quick disposal of cases, open hearings, and transparent judicial processes are now the characteristics of this court.

Several members of the Dhaka Bar said that the trial is now truly based on the law. We can see the glow of responsibility and impartiality in the eyes and faces of the judges. Due to this, trust has also returned among the trial seekers.

When asked, a young visa aspirant said, earlier it felt like going to court would be the ultimate test of time and patience. When I used to go to court, everything seemed uncertain. The case did not progress, and I had to travel week after week. Now the hearing is being held on time, the court is assisting with the necessary documents. My visa case was also settled in just three weeks.

A source related to the court said that although there are still some complaints of delays or political influence in the CMM courts of Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, or Barishal, Dhaka is now creating a new model that surpasses all others. Those concerned also say that this transformation of the Dhaka CMM court is not just a change in a building - it is a story of rebuilding trust and reform in the judicial system, which is strengthening the foundation of democracy. This change proves that when the state wants it, the judiciary can also be a light of truth, justice, and hope for the people.
