- Child with Diarrhea, pneumonia &breath problem

- Food be healthy and preserved scientifically

The number of patients in the Dhaka Shishu Hospital is increasing every day in the intense heatwave. Due to increased patient pressure, the hospital has faced a shortage of beds. As a result, patients are crowding in the wards and verandas. Hospital authorities are struggling to handle the influx of patients.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Office has again issued a 'heat alert' for three days. The elderly, the sick, and the children are the worst affected by the intense heatwave. Children are suffering from various diseases including diarrhea, pneumonia, and shortness of breath, cold cough, fever, and asthma. There is a shortage of beds in the capital's Shishu hospital due to increased patient pressure.

According to sources, none of the 681 beds remain vacant. Statistics shows that more than 90 patients with pneumonia are hospitalized. In the last 24 hours, more than 250 patients with fever, cold, and cough have been treated and 16 patients with pneumonia have been admitted. About 60 people treated patients with diarrhea in 24 hours. 110 to 140 patients are being admitted to the hospital daily. The total number of patients seen including outpatients and emergency departments is about 1200.

7-month-old Rafiya was admitted to the Children's Hospital for 17 days due to pneumonia. Her mother Seema Begum said, first the girl coughed. There was no fever in the body. Rafiya caught a fever after coming to the hospital. The cough and fever are a little less, but since yesterday, the problem of diarrhea has appeared again. Today the doctors gave four tests.

Two-and-a-half-year-old Saifa is admitted to bed number 10 of the Pneumonia Unit. Her relatives said that Saifa is suffering from cold, cough, and pneumonia. She was hospitalized for three days. She is now somewhat on the mend.

Shishu hospital resident doctor Dr. Farhana Ahmed ‍Shoroni said in an interview given to the media that the pressure of the patients in the children's hospital is increasing every day in the intense heat. Children are suffering from various diseases including diarrhea, pneumonia, and shortness of breath, cold cough, fever, and asthma. Due to an increase in patient pressure, there is a shortage of beds. We are getting patients with various waterborne diseases such as jaundice, dysentery, blood dysentery, and various skin diseases. The most are common cold, cough, and pneumonia. Now everyone from home to home is suffering from fever and cough. In children, it progresses to pneumonia.

She said we have patients from all over the country. Patients are also referred to the ICU from different places. Children who can be treated at home as much as possible are sent home with treatment as well as counseling to manage stress. After understanding the condition of the patient, I advise when to bring them to the hospital again. We are only admitting those who are seeing more complex issues. If 150 patients are admitted every day, that number of patients will have to be given leave. Those who are feeling a little healthy can take the rest of the treatment at home; we are giving them leave soon. This is done to handle the pressure.

Hospital Director Professor Dr. Jahangir Alam said children should be prevented from going outside in the sun. They should be kept in a cool shaded place, covered with thin white cotton cloth or bare skin. Plenty of water and fruit juices can be given.

She said that the door and window of the house should be kept open in this summer. Parents should not keep food in the open for a long time, if there is a refrigerator; food should be stored in the refrigerator. Food should be taken out of the fridge and reheated. Children's body sweat should be wiped. Bathing can be done several times a day if necessary. Children should be prevented from eating cold refrigerator water or ice cream at this time.
