The severe heat has increased the incidence of waterborne diseases across the country. Everyone from children to old people is getting sick in the heat. Every day new records are being added in the temperature of the country. Meanwhile, there is a shortage of fresh water in various districts. The number of patients suffering from water borne diseases has increased by 30 to 40 percent in government hospitals across the country including the capital. Most of them are suffering from water borne diseases.

Ismail Ali, a resident of Uttara, came to the International Diarrhea Research Center (ICDDR,B) with his eight-year-old son for treatment. He said that three days ago the boy had consumed sugarcane juice on his way back from coaching. Stomach pain started that night with diarrhea. I took saline from the pharmacy for him. But the stomach ache was not decreasing in any way. On the advice of a local doctor, we brought him to ICDDR, B Hospital. Now he is better than ever. A six-year-old child, Maria Aktar, who is being treated at the same hospital after consuming bell syrup sold on the pavement. Mother Asma Akhter is sitting next to her daughter. She said that, four days ago, on the way back from school by walking in the afternoon, the girl ate the street sherbet (Drink) sold on road. The next morning she started vomiting and infected by diarrhea. We fed her Saline but nothing changed. When taken to a private clinic, the doctor asked to bring her to ICDDR, B. She is admitted here for two days. The situation is slightly improving. ICDDR,B is known as the Cholera Hospital, usually has 200 to 300 patients admitted. However, the average number of patients currently admitted has exceeded 500 to 600 due to the ongoing crisis in the country.

According to the information of the hospital, most of the patients who come for treatment in summer are children. Most of them are children who have had diarrhea after consuming liquid food from outside. Such a situation is not only in ICDDR,B. Many people are coming to get treatment for diarrhoea, fever and cold in almost all the hospitals of the capital. According to the information of the Meteorological Department, the number of patients suffering from waterborne diseases is increasing every day in the hospitals of Jashore, Chuadanga, Dinajpur, Nilphamari, Rajshahi, Pabna, Faridpur and Gopalganj districts which are affected by severe heat wave. In some districts, sufficient saline is not available. Meanwhile, the data analysis of the Meteorological Department shows that the people of 21 districts are at risk of health due to the ongoing heat wave in the country. A study by the Institute of Public Health said that 94 percent of the water used in sidewalk tea shops contains faecal bacteria, 44 percent contains other bacteria and 29.4 percent contains heavy metals above acceptable levels.

Regarding the reason for the increase in the incidence of water-borne diseases, Prof. Dr. Bay-Nazir Ahmed, the former director of the disease control branch of the Department of Health, said dehydration occurs in hot summer. Many people consume unhealthy syrups and water on the streets. Most of these foods are prepared in unsanitary conditions. Research shows that these foods contain various harmful bacteria for the body. Due to which the number of patients suffering from diarrhea is increasing in hospitals. Apart from this, such patients with typhoid, paratyphoid, jaundice can also increase.

At this time, those who are suffering from various respiratory diseases are also experiencing shortness of breath, cough and asthma. Those who will work outside in hot weather; they should rest for 15-20 minutes sitting in the shade every two hours. In summer, salt is removed from the body. For this, a lot of water, salted water, Orsaline, green coconut should be consumed. Be aware before taking any food because food doesn't last long in summer. Because of this, even if there is a small amount of bacteria in the food, it increases a lot in this heat, which causes diarrhea. During this time, you should drink pure water according to your physical needs.
