Three dengue patients die, 62 hospitalized in 24 hrs

Three dengue patients died, and 62 others were admitted to hospitals around the country in the 24 hours leading up to 8 a.m. today.

On November 3, Bangladesh recorded nine dengue deaths, the most this year in a single day. "During the last 24 hours, as many as 35 dengue patients were hospitalized in Dhaka city and 27 patients were admitted to different hospitals outside Dhaka," according to a press release from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

 "A total of 281 people died from dengue disease between January 1 and December 27. The first death from dengue was reported on June 21, this year," the daily statement of the DGHS said.  With the new cases, the total number of patients rose to 62,189 this year while some 61,513 patients were released from the hospitals.  Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne illness that occurs in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. Outbreak of the disease is usually seasonal, peaking during and after rainy seasons.

 The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies dengue as one of the top 10 threats to public health.
