Hartwig Schaefer, the former vice president of the World Bank's South Asia region, is no more. He died of a heart attack in Austria last Wednesday (May 10). Mehreen E Mahbub, Public Relations Officer of World Bank's Dhaka office, confirmed this information on Monday (May 15).
Mehreen E Mahbub said, Hartwig Schaefer retired only a year ago. He is a citizen of Austria. He died of a massive heart attack at his home. He was one of the friends of Bangladesh. He has come to Bangladesh several times. He also took a rickshaw from Bangladesh to the head office of the World Bank.
Hartwig Schaefer took over as Vice President of the South Asia region on July 1, 2018. During this time he oversaw World Bank portfolios with Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. He was living a retired life in his native Austria for the past one year.
