Ichamati river dam at risk

The Fish Fry Processing Point has been constructed illegally by cutting the banks of the Ichamati River and laying pipes. This fishing point or hatchery has been built on hundreds of bighas of government land on the banks of the river. Even though it has been coming for years, the concerned authorities including the Water Development Board have not taken any initiative to stop it.

It has been seen on the surface that small and big fishing points have been created by occupying the riverside land along the banks of the Ichamati River where the river fish are being raised by keeping the water deep. The encroachers are blocking the water on the land along the river and extracting the water through pipes. Also, after the tide, the water from the downstream point is pumped into the river, breaking the bank. In this, several hundreds of bighas of riverside fisheries, crop fields, and homestead yards are at extreme risk.

Especially in the area adjacent to Townshreepur isgate of Ichamati River, Nur Mohammad Ali and his son Abu Hasan and Mr. Ali, Iman Ali's son Pintu and Mintu occupied the banks and established separate fishing points. In this regard, Mr. Ali said, that for a long time, they have been making fish points by cutting the banks of the river. Many people including Mahabub Rahman, Section Officer of the Water Development Board, know this. He also said that the water development board does various tasks and therefore gets additional benefits.

When Mahabub Rahman, Section Officer (SO) of Polder No. 3 of the Water Development Board was asked, he said that he did not know anything about these matters. Action will be taken against the culprits if the crime is observed after investigating the matter on the spot.
