Removal of three canal embankments

The removal of nets, straps and dams of various canals has started in Bagerhat. Md Saifullah, Sadar Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land), removed nets, straps and dams of three canals named Kabiraj Canal, Haribulla and Pachuakhali in Shatagombuz Union of Sadar Upazila last Wednesday. Meanwhile, the village police representatives and hundreds of local men and women spontaneously removed the dam and hundreds of nets. Farmers and locals are happy as the canal has been opened under government patronage.

Amit Kumar Maitra, who participated in the cutting of the dam, said they gave the straps and dam; we cut the dam and the straps.

Local UP member Dulal Ranjan said in the morning I went to the Deputy Commissioner to demand the removal of the dam. But I didn't realize it would work so fast.

He said there are more canals in Shatagombuz Union, in which illegal fishing is done. If those canals can also be freed from encroachment, the local people will benefit.

Bagerhat District Commissioner Mohammad Khalid Hossain said in view of the request of the locals, the dams and nets of the three canals have been removed. Also, the canals in the district where there are illegal dams and nets will be removed in a phased manner.
