Three-month ban on fishing begins

A three-month ban on netting, marketing, and transportation of fish from Kaptai Lake has been imposed aiming to ensure natural breeding and development of Carp fish in the lake. The local administration has imposed the ban which will come into effect from yesterday midnight and will continue till July 24. Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Musharraf Hossain Khan said that a fishing ban has been imposed for three months to increase the natural reproduction of Carp and Rui fish in Kaptai Lake and increase the balanced breed. During this ban, foodgrain assistance will be provided to fishermen who depend on fish harvesting through special VGF cards.

Meanwhile, every year, the government imposes a three-month ban on fishing, marketing, and transportation of fish from Kaptai Lake aiming to ensure the natural reproduction of fish. The  administration would harvest 25-lakh MT of Carp fish in  Kaptai Lake in the current month. As a result, nobody can continue fishing in the period. Besides, within the period, the 'Fisheries Aroths' (wholesale centers) will remain closed. The lake continues to serve as a valuable reservoir for hatchery and fish production as well. Fish produced in the lake meets local demand and is also supplied to  Dhaka and other parts of the country. The average annual production of fish is more than 7,000 MT.
