40 gates of Muhuri river regulator open

The Water Development Board (WDB) has opened 40 gates of the Muhuri regulator built on the Bara Feni River in Sonagazi upazila to remove water quickly to protect the two upazilas from hill floods and floods.

Earlier, several areas in Fulgazi and Parshuram upazilas were flooded due to the pressure of water in the Muhuri River in Feni and due to the pressure of heavy rains and onrush of water from upstream hills in the last few days.

Earlier on Monday and Tuesday, the embankment of the 122 km embankment of the Muhuri River breached at five places and flooded several villages of Parshuram and Fulgazi and low-lying areas were inundated.

Feni Water Development Board Sub-Divisional Engineer Md Abul Kashem said Parshuram and Fulgazi upazilas should not be flooded. Considering that aspect, all the gates of Feni regulator have been opened to remove excess water.

Regarding the sudden opening of all the gates, Md Abul Kashem said the water level of the Muhuri River rose by 120 to 125 centimeters in one day till 7 pm yesterday. As a result, several areas including the low-lying areas of Fulgazi and Parshuram upazilas of the district have been flooded.

He added that the waters of the Muhuri River and the Kalidas Pahalia River fall into the Bay of Bengal mainly through the Feni River. Fulgazi and Parshuram upazilas of Tripura in India were flooded when the upstream waters started drowning in the rivers. All the gates of the Muhuri regulator have been opened to keep the flow of water and to move the water towards the Bay of Bengal quickly. Still, due to excessive water pressure, it will take at least a week for all the water to recede.
