An elephant has died after being electrocuted by humans while grazing in the reserved forest in Teknaf Baharchara union of Cox's Bazar. The elephant is believed to be around 25 years old.
The incident took place in Noakhali's Konapara area around 5:00am.
Eyewitnesses said the fire was seen burning in front of Md Hossain's house in Konar Para area after Fajr prayers. At that time, the eyewitnesses saw the elephant and went to stop the main needle of Md Hossain's illegal electric shock line.The elephant died on the spot shortly after the power lines were shut down. Later, when the matter was reported to the forest department, the forest staff visited the spot.
Cox's Bazar South Forest Department Officer Sarwar Alam said that elephants are roaming in the reserved forest. These elephants sometimes come to the locality. Before dawn today, a wild elephant entered the locality in Noakhali area. Elephants have died due to illegal electric shock given by Md Hossain. A case will be registered against the owner of the house and the elephant has been buried after the post-mortem.
