Mdhosin Ali, a ginger farmer of Garabaria village in Maheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah, has made an exemplary fortune by cultivating ginger in sack, a popular spice rich in flavor enhancers and medicinal properties. On the advice of Maheshpur Agriculture Office, for the first time he has responded by clearing the bushes of fallen land and putting ginger in sacks (bagging method). Seeing this, many people in Garabaria village are showing interest in cultivating ginger in sacks.
Mahasin became interested in ginger cultivation on the advice of Upazila Agriculture Office, after which he started cultivation with sample seed fertilizer and with their advice, said Mahasin.
At First he prepared the soil by mixing ash, organic manure and sand. Experimentally, he filled 450 sacks of soil in 4 katha land and made it like a tub. Three to four ginger seedlings are planted in each bag.
Mahasin Ali said, "In this way, the biggest advantage of ginger cultivation is that it can be cultivated in fallow land at very limited cost and with little labor.
Mentioning that ginger can be found in each sack, he said, "Ginger plants require very little water." Fertilizers or pesticides are used very less. Sometimes some drugs need to be sprayed to prevent leaf dieback disease. Apart from this, no maintenance is required. In this way, one can easily profit by cultivating ginger.”
He also said, "Initially, I cultivated on a small scale. If the profit is good this year, then I will cultivate ginger on a larger scale in the future. The total cost of planting saplings in a sack is around Tk 45. But one and a half to two kg of ginger can be found in each bag. Currently, the market price of two kg of ginger is Tk 200.”
Seeing this method of Mahasin's ginger cultivation has created interest aMdng many people in the area. Many people came to see the ginger cultivation from the surrounding villages.
Local resident Jalal said, "I have never seen ginger cultivation like this before. After watching it, we got interested.
Assistant Agriculture Officer Amelendu Kumar Pramanik said that many people do not have high land for ginger cultivation. So ginger cultivation in sacks is suggested in fallow land. Apart from this, the abandoned land of the house is also being used. Apart from Garabaria, ginger is also being cultivated in Baga, Patibila, Natima areas.
Maheshpur Upazila Agriculture Officer Yasmin Sultana said that ginger cultivation does not cost much. 10 kg of soil, 4 kg of organic manure, 1 kg of vermicompost should be given in a bag. If you plant ginger seeds there, you get good yield in 10 Mdnths. He also experimentally cultivated ginger in sacks in Maheshpur with good response. 13 thousand 700 sacks of ginger have been cultivated in the upazila. It is expected that 10-12 tons of ginger will be produced there.
