Success in pearl farming

Jihad and Zahid, two brothers of Medua union of Daulatkhan upazila of Bhola, are dreaming of success by cultivating pearls for the first time in Bhola. The pearls they cultivate have become suitable for sale.

The pearl farmers are called Md Jihad and Zahid Hossain, residents of Ward No. 6 of Medua Union of Daulatkhan upazila of Bhola. They're cousins in relation. One is an army man by profession, while the other is an employee of the Rural Public Development Agency. In 2022, they became interested in pearl farming. Then in December of that year, they brought oysters and pearl designs from Naogaon and started pearl cultivation in their own 24 percent land pond in Medua village of Medua union of Daulatkhan upazila near their house. They brought 1,000 oysters and designs and filled them in 35 cages and released them into the pond. It cost them a total of Tk 65,000. Every 15 days, they put fertilizer and lime in the pond. It costs Tk 500 daily.

Jihad and Zahid said they have eight pearl designs. Now their pearls are about 9 months old. In the next four months, they will be able to sell pearls in the market. The wholesale market price of pearls is Tk 200 to Tk 250 per piece. The market price of pearls for sale will then be estimated at Tk 2-2.5 lakh. The two young men hope to make a huge profit by cultivating pearls for the first time.

Daulatkhan Upazila Fisheries Officer Mahfuzur Rahman said the he has gone to see the pond several times and are giving them guidance.
